Sydney Thompson (RCC)

Sydney is a couples and relationship therapist with a particular passion for helping people strengthen the relationships that matter most. Although couples counselling is a central focus of her practice, she also enjoys working with teenagers, parents, families, and individuals experiencing anxiety or relational concerns.

With a background in biological psychology and neuropsychology, Sydney has always been fascinated by the ways our brains, emotions, experiences, and relationships shape one another. She draws from research-supported approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and attachment- and emotion-focused therapies, while adapting her approach to the unique person or relationship in front of her.

As a wife and mother of two, Sydney also understands that close relationships and family life can be deeply meaningful, complicated, demanding, and occasionally funny; often all at once.

Sydney’s areas of focus include:

  • Couples and relationship counselling: Sydney is trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples. She helps partners slow down the painful cycles that can leave them feeling misunderstood, defensive, disconnected, or alone and begin to understand what is happening beneath the surface. Her goal is not to decide who is right or wrong, but to help each partner feel heard, communicate more openly, and build a relationship that feels safer, stronger, and more connected.

  • Teen counselling: Supporting teenagers as they navigate anxiety, identity, self-esteem, relationships, family stress, school pressures, and the many challenges that come with growing up.

  • Parenting and family relationships: Helping parents better understand their children, navigate conflict and boundaries, strengthen communication, and build greater connection within their families.

  • Individual anxiety and relational concerns: Supporting individuals experiencing anxiety, overthinking, people-pleasing, boundary difficulties, communication challenges, recurring relationship patterns, and life transitions.

In sessions with Sydney, you can expect openness, genuine curiosity, practical tools, some gentle direction when it is helpful, and likely a little nerdiness and humour along the way. She offers a welcoming, inclusive, and non-judgmental space where difficult experiences can be explored honestly without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Sydney believes that human connection is one of the most important ingredients in healing. Therapy is not always about eliminating difficult thoughts, feelings, or experiences; sometimes it is about learning to make room for them while choosing how you want to respond. Together, Sydney works with clients toward meaningful change at a manageable pace, helping them deepen important bonds and move toward the relationships and lives they want to build.
